The Magic Behind Getting That Smile.

One of my absolute favourite parts of being a photographer is my residency within three local nursery and preschool settings. Two to Three times a year, I get the chance to capture little personalities in their natural, joyful worlds – and it’s honestly magical.

Photographing children is never about the perfect pose or getting them to sit still (because let’s be real – that rarely happens). It’s about connection. It’s about understanding each child as a whole person – even at such a young age – and gently discovering what makes them light up from the inside.

Sometimes that spark comes from a silly noise or a peek-a-boo moment. Other times, it’s in the quiet, calm reassurance that they’re safe and seen. Respecting their boundaries is something I take to heart. I never force a smile. I never push for a pose. It’s all about building trust.

And when I’ve tried all the tricks and giggles I know? I go to my favourite go-to method.

I simply ask them to shout, “Mummy!” or “Daddy!”

There’s something so special about those words – they’re pure magic. You can see their little eyes light up, their faces beam with recognition and love. Those special names are often the key to unlocking the biggest, most genuine smiles.

It’s such a privilege to be the one to capture those moments – real, beautiful, full of heart.

Until next time,
