The Shot That Changed Everything.
Some people remember their first love. I remember my first camera.
It was a Fujifilm FinePix – a small DSLR, light enough to carry but powerful enough to spark something big. A gift from my parents as I left school, that camera came everywhere with me. From quiet weekends with friends to long walks alone, it was my third eye, always searching for a story, a feeling, a moment worth remembering.
But truthfully? I didn’t always know photography would be my path.
As school ended and the pressure of “what next?” loomed, I found myself torn between two very different worlds. Photography called to my creative side, a world of light, color, and emotion. But strangely enough, I was also drawn to something completely different—becoming a funeral director. The contrast is stark, I know. But both careers share one thing in common: they’re rooted in emotion, in human connection, in honoring life.
Eventually, I chose the artistic road and enrolled in a photography course at college. It felt right. But it wasn’t until a trip to South Africa that my purpose truly came into focus.
It was a family holiday, one of those rare times when life slows down just enough for something important to catch up with you. We visited a lion sanctuary—beautiful, raw, unforgettable. And that’s when it happened.
The moment. The shot.
He emerged from the golden brush, muscles rippling beneath his fur, eyes fixed, watching. I raised my camera. My heart beat so hard I felt it in my fingers. Then—he roared.
The sound rattled through my ribs. His eyes locked with mine, straight through the lens. I pressed the shutter.
Click.
I didn’t just take a photo that day. Something took hold of me. That lion didn’t just give me a powerful image—he gave me clarity. A silent agreement passed between us, fierce and certain.
“He chose my path —
— And I accepted it.”
That photo went on to push me to get out there, grasping my first residency, my first wedding, the first of many milestones. But more than the recognition and achievements, it gave me confidence. Direction. Identity. Photography is no longer just something I do—it’s who I am. And every time I look through my lens, I remember that lion. That roar. That feeling.
